Painful Conditions

Chinese medicine treats painful problems by regulating the imbalances of the entire body. Different individuals suffer from diverse pain, which therefore requires the targeting of different points on different meridians. In the view of Chinese medicine, most pain is due to a blockage of Qi and blood within the channels and collaterals (Jing and Luo). Acupuncture needles can provide stimulation to promote Qi and blood circulation, enabling the blockage to become cleared. Acupuncture can be combined with the theories of Western medicine by sending a message to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), resulting in the release of endorphins, the chemicals that obstruct the message of pain from being delivered to the brain.

Acupuncture is beneficial for many pain-related conditions including: headache, neck, shoulder and low back pain, menstrual cramps, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis (especially of the knee), delivery pain, and the quantity of pain in some cancer patients, and much more.

Chinese herbal medicine is also effective in treating pain issues. In clinical practice, specialists usually provide a few sessions of intense acupuncture (depending on the degree of pain and its duration), followed by the addition of herbal remedies to support the gains of acupuncture.
